This idea of this study derives from the development problems faced by historic neighborhoods and streets in historical and cultural cities. The study discussed the social, environmental, economic and cultural factors that affects the “adaptively renewal” of historic blocks. In the study, classifications and comparative studies are performed against the current status and measures utilized to preserve the historical blocks inside ancient Quanzhou city perimeter. The objective of the study is to1) explore the guideline and method of adaptively renewal of the historical blocks, under the big picture of urbanization;2) provide real world case and theoretical support for preserving and sustainably reconstruct historical blocks. Content are stated in three major perspectives:First part (including chapter1and2) is the subject study: the first chapter summarized the origins, the significance, the purpose and methods, explained the concepts such as “adaptation”,“adaptive renewal”,“the adaptive renewal of historical blocks”, and determined the contact, method and framework used in the study. In the second chapter, fundamental research of how adaptive renewal is performed. This chapter traces the evolution of the concept of preserving historical blocks, analyzes the factors that are crucial to renew historical blocks, and recognizes the value and significance of adaptive renewal of historical blocks, considering the current grim situation.The second part (including chapters3and4) is the concept study. To provide a scientific and rational support for sustainable renewal, this part includes the overall analysis of the historical layout of Quanzhou historical district, with the emphasis on15historical streets. The chapter also categorizes, analyzes and summarizes the value and quality of Quanzhou historical district. Chapter4provides a serial of suggestions and measures of adaptive renewal, based on the case study and in‐depth analysis of Quanzhou historicial district’s development.The third part (chapter5) is the application research: In chapter5, a comprehensive case study of south Quanzhou historical district (covering commercial, tourism and resident area) is performed, supported by data from field studies and surveys. Also detail suggestions of how adaptive renewal can be performed in south Quanzhou historical district, is covered in the chapter based on the study of historical layout, current problems, and the analysis of different renewal method.
