Along with the deepening of urbanization process,the scale of cities in China's is expanding constantly,and more and more modern new urban areas are emerging.However,a sharp contradiction between urban development and protection of historical blocks is hiding behind this phenomenon.How to renew old historical blocks to be livable and in line with the requirements of urban development while reducing the damage of urban texture and avoiding the serious homogenization of urban features which has become an urgent problem in the process of urbanization.With the perspective of "Urban Catalyst Theory",through investigation,case analysis and literature research,this paper makes an analysis of the current theory and situation of the renovation design of traditional blocks in China,and puts forward a set of new ideas for squares renewal practice,and a conceptual design scheme for the renovation of historical blocks of Daxi Road in Zhenjiang,Jiangsu,using relevant design strategies,hoping to provide a reference of the city renew in China.The core content of this paper is based on the application research of "urban catalyst" theory in the renewal design of historic districts,combining with the corresponding design practice,and proposes the following views: 1.Urban catalyst theory emphasizes the design idea of connection,which would expand the chain effect of catalyst,help to improve the influence and efficiency of the renewal of districts,and shape the storyline of Historic District space.2.Urban catalyst theory takes into account both functional requirements and the continuation of urban texture.It pays a lot attention to the local protection of urban environment and the revitalization of the comprehensive vitality of historical blocks.3.The application of urban catalyst theory is based on "elements" and extending to "cities",which may become the trend of future renewal design in the case of more stringent restrictions on urban historical blocks renewal.
