With the developing of electricity technique and application of extrahigh voltage alternating and direct current, big power grid is getting intouch with each other. It will require higher level of correction、rapidity、reliability to relay protection. Although traditional relay protection isalways developing, from electromagnetic relay protection tomicrocomputer relay protection. It still has its limitations, such as longtime delayed action、poor selectivity、unreasonable settings. In additiontraditional relay protection can not take care of the whole power grid, itcan only effect in part of power grid. And it will also not consider theaction effect to the whole power grid. So the applications of wide areaprotect and MAS will solve the problem largely. It will bring relayprotection to the new field after putting forward the wide area protectionconception. Now using mature communication and computer techniqueand sharing all related electric parameters and information in wide areawill make the decision and make sure the scope of protection to the powergrid failure and abnormal operating state. The paper mainly introduces the basic design ideas of wide areaprotection、some wide area differential algorithms、some design principles and simulation examples. The paper also mentions the possibilities ofreality of wide area protection by using PMU、GPS technique in widearea protection design. At last the paper mentions the application of MAStechnique. Although MAS technique research is not comprehensive, but itwill bring large development space by using MAS technique in design ofwide area protection. MAS technique and wide area differentialprotection together can give more accurate fault location. It will alsoimprove the safety and reliability of power grid operation by overcomingthe long time action when IEDs refuse to operate and shortcoming ofcutting off more area.
