With the vigorous development of China’s hydropower industry, the percentage of thegenerating capacity in the power system is increasing, and more and more large capacityunits appeared. The security and stability of the hydropower units are becomingincreasingly important for the entire power grid. It is because of the maintenance systemof the hydropower station has its own flaws such as over-repair or lack-repair, and thegiant hydropower units emerge in large numbers, the drawbacks of the currentmaintenance system increase seriously. In order to improve the relevance of repair toensure the security, economy, long-term and stability of the hydropower station, a specificmonitoring and fault diagnosis system used for hydropower units required more. Thismust be the inevitable direction of the reform of power system and the system for thepower industry, and the whole national economy also has its significance.Around condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of hydropower units, the problem isthat the system of condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of hydropower units can’t meetthe requirements of intelligent hydropower plants. this paper complete fault diagnosissystem of hydropower unit and provides the solid foundation for the whole plant levelcondition-based maintenance of hydropower plants base on condition monitoring ofhydropower units.First, this article made a summary for the research on the on-line monitoring andfaults diagnosis of hydropower units, discussed for the importance of the fault diagnosissystem for hydropower units, and a detailed analysis about the research status anddevelopment trend of the fault diagnosis also were done. Second, based on the introduceof the principles and methods of the condition monitoring system, the vibration faultdiagnosis system and the cavitation fault diagnosis system which were used forhydropower units were set up in this paper. Third, the field operation of the system provedthe feasibility of the system. And the result has an important significance forcondition-based maintenance of the whole plant. Finally, the article summarizes theresearch of the paper, discussed the problems that the system has yet to be improved, andfurther research work on the prospect.
