Smart substation is the important foundation and support of constructing smart grid, which is accompanied with the concept of smart grid. The condition monitoring technology which is under the state of equipment operation, performs real-time monitoring substation equipment state whose safe operation under monitoring has always been one of the major issues affiliated to safe operation of power system. Monitoring devices based on substation equipment operation are able to detect problems timely, understand the operation status, improve the security and reliability, and reduce power cut time and maintenance time. Substation state monitoring can supply theoretical data for assessment to substation state, provide the basis for the decision of smart grid and lay the foundation for the development of smart grid.In the construction of the smart substation, devices in operation often lead to high failure rate due to various reasons resulting to fever, which are transformer, circuit breakers, lightning arrester, high/low pressure switch, the power cable and other important equipment, because of not using powerful monitoring preventive measures. Statistical data offered by Electrical safety supervision Department suggests every year thousands of major accidents happen on the substation equipment across the country, because the temperature of equipment is too high, causing heavy economic losses to production and management. Therefore, it is necessary and urgent to implement intelligent real-time temperature monitoring system of important equipment in substation. As far as current temperature on-line monitoring system for substation is concerned, various monitor manufacturers have their own equipment and agreement, triggering a series of questions, are not qualified to satisfying the needs of the construction of smart substation.The paper firstly introduces a variety of temperature monitoring technology in the application of substation, and then it describes the basis of ZigBee and structure design of ZigBee wireless network for temperature measurement system. On this basis, the paper respectively conducts ZigBee temperature sensor and centralized temperature display device for the hardware and software design, of which, the hardware design of ZigBee temperature sensor includes radio frequency module selection, selection of temperature sensors, antenna design of frequency modules and power supply technology. The development of ZigBee protocol stack takes a most important part in the software design, and the development process of each layer is briefly described. Secondly the design of centralized temperature display device implements Zigbee wireless network for processing and centralized display of temperature information.Finally overall debugged for system is made and the test results are analyzed. The results show that the ZigBee wireless networks can be stable and effective to transmit data, basically achieved the desired goals and verify the correctness of design ideas. The system is the important guarantee for secure and stable operation of smart substation equipment, which not only realizes data sharing, reduces the cost of the important equipment test and the comprehensive wiring cost but also iresponses to the construction of national smart grid framework.
