Modern missionary school architecture composes an important chapter in theShanghai’s modern architectural history. It played an important role as an example ofsignificance in the development of Shanghai modern architecture as well as ofeducational architecture. Xujiahui is the location of the Modern Catholic BishopHouse of Shanghai, of which Xuhui Middle School as ’the first Western School’occupies an important position in the history of both education and architecture. Thispaper is a research based on the case study of Chongsi Building of Xuhui MiddleSchool, learning from three aspects (historical changes, current problems,preservation and regeneration strategies.) History-tracing through historical contextstudy in its construction, use and renovation process. Value-examining of itsarchitecture based on site investigation. Regeneration strategy making through studyof the surrounding environment with relation to its socio-economic development. Inthis way, a viable direction for preservation and regeneration of the modernmissionary school architecture can be sought.
