The light-emitting diode (LED) is used for the indicator lamp at the earliest. Until the late1990s, the white LED as a new type of solid-state lighting source (SSL) was introduced to the field of lighting. It promotes the development of lighting technology and becomes the third generation of the new light source after the second generation of the gas discharge lamp. Due to the high energy consumption of the electric incandescent lamp and mercury hazards of the fluorescent light, they no longer meet the criteria for the development of contemporary society and are bound to be replaced, while LED becomes the best to replace the traditional light sources with its advantages of saving energy, environmental protection and long life. Nowadays, LED lighting technology is not only for industrial use, but also turns to the civilian market; it will replace the incandescent and fluorescent lamps in the near future, which will definitely bring in new ideas of the lighting design.To some extent, the lighting design is limited by the volume of conventional light sources and their emitting principles which not only impose restrictions on the lamp shapes, but also in some way, on the functions. Based on the LED characteristics of compact size and cold light source, the household lighting in future will climb to an unprecedented level in style and function, which will be completely different from the existing lamps.The household lighting not only solves the lighting problem by dispelling the darkness, but also plays a particularly important role in the light environment and has certain impact on the psychological intervention. It is the general trend of lighting in the future that the lighting will possess a variety of functions and roles to enhance the additional value.LED features in the compact size, rich colors and computer programming control on the chips. So the intelligent control and photochromic design will become the focus of LED design in the future:automatically adjust the brightness of indoor LED lamps according to the intensity of natural light outside, make photochromic control at home subjectively, even introduce the color therapy for the physiological and psychological interventions to help people relieve the anxiety and relax the mind.It is inevitable that the concepts of lighting design undergo the changes and people begin to rethink of the lighting design before the reform of the light sources. The industrial designers should take various advantage of the new light sources to explore the needs of people, especially human’s potential demands, and design the home lighting products which are of practical value, more humane, and make the light environment more scientific and reasonable.
