High embankment is one of the most common types of subgrade, as the majority areasof our country are mountainous and hilly. In order to clear the key problems of highembankment construction based on the main diseases of high embankment, deformationfailure form and design condition were choose as the subject. By investigation ofChongqing Yulin expressway, Shanxi Taijiu expressway, Guizhou Guixin expressway,Sichuan Chengya expressway and Sichuan Chengnan expressway, the problems duringdesign and construction of high embankment were summarized and the settlement formand instability inducement were analyzed.Based on the failure law and instability inducement analysis,2D geologicalmechanics model test on all-filled embankment and slope embankment with different watercontent and compactness were designed. Results show that compactness has a great impacton the settlement of subgrade; the ratio of settlement after construction and in constructionof all-filled embankment was decreased as the height increasing. Research results providethe basis for ultrahigh design of high-filled embankment which settlement ratio is generally10percent.In the end of this paper,by the settlement centrifugal test of high embankment,thelaw of vertical and horizontal displacements with different dry density, water content andsize were researched. The results provide the basis for settlement prediction and fillingquantity of high embankment.
