In the development of the social economy, a larger and larger demand forelectricity makes the grid structure more and more complex, as a result of which, ahigher reliability for the power supply is necessary. With faults in the power system,it is switched manually by power dispatchers or operators, which greatly reduces theefficiency and reliability of power supply. A spare power source automatic switch cansomehow improve the reliability, but nowadays the available automatic switchingdevices, which just provides a local back-up power source for a single substation,fails to read the logic once the inner connection or running mode of the substationbecome different, in other words, the devices cannot be controlled automaticallyfaraway. Moreover, a local spare power source automatic switch can hardly obtain theoverall information of the power grid and match the automatic safety devices.In view of the problems mentioned above, and taking into consideration themature technology of dispatch automation system in obtaining overall informationand remote controlling, this paper discusses developing a module of spare powersource automatic switching based on the dispatch automation system. Such moduleanalyzes the collected telemetering data and telesignalling data by means of thecomputing strategy in the software, and controls the related power source switches byremote output, so as to improve the reliability of the grid operation.First of all, the development of spare power source automatic switchingprotection technology at home and abroad is introduced and the arising problems areanalyzed, as well as a description of the basic theory on wide-area spare powersource automatic switching protection.What’s more, a thorough discussion andresearch is carried out about wide-area spare power source automatic switchingprotection on its software system, control functions, logic in different cases ofconnection, and methods to examine the functions. Last but not least, taking theconstruction of wide-area spare power source automatic switching in Zhongshanpower supply bureau for example, this paper describes briefly about how to achievethe wide-area spare power source automatic switching analyzed above, and presentsthe operating status and benefit with testing data in real cases.
