Recently with the growth of population and the development of economy, rivers are in extreme danger of losing its functions and health problems than ever before. Whether the ecosystem works well is one of the crucial symbols of rivers’health. The method of river health assessment based on dominant ecosystem service is proposed in this paper and is used in Dawen River. The research work includes:(1) To give an overview of the theoretical development of river health theory around the globe, including its two major theoretical divisions. To elaborate on the evaluation methods of river health in other countries such as United States and Britain, and point out the characteristics and limitations of these methods.(2) Considering the studies on ecosystem service function both at home and abroad, this thesis aims to present a definition of ecosystem service function of rivers, and analyze the relation between the river ecosystem service function and the river health evaluation.(3) To elaborate on the four categories of river’s ecosystem service function, including service-providing function, adjusting function, supporting function and culture function. To set up the health evaluation method based on the actual situation of the object, tell its leading service function, and provide proper evaluation index.(4) To evaluate the health of Dawen River with the aforementioned method, build up a evaluation model which uses BHI to indicate the health of the representative area, and uses I to indicate the performance of the area’s functions. The final step follows with an allergy analysis which will examine whether the model works in stability.(5) The BHI of MouWen-TaiShan in2005and2010are0.48and0.53respectively, the soil preservation, entertainment and relaxation functions of the river are performing well, but the performance of adjusting flood function is bad. The BHI of Dawen-Dongpin in2005and2010are0.43and0.48respectively, indicating that its supporting function performs the worst and the other functions in average level. This thesis makes an effort to provide remedial measures for the two representative areas supply regional repair plans for each ecosystem function according to the evaluation results.
