Rivers are an important part of the ecosystem, not only for the river biota provide aliving environment and plays a vital role in the development of a more human society.In recent years, in the process of rapid economic development and urbanization, manyrivers have the deterioration of water quality, habitat destruction, sensitive aquaticorganisms and damage the the ecosystem of the river serious, while pure waterevaluation has been unable to fully reaction the actual state of health of the river and tomeet the needs of the river development managers. It is necessary to evaluate of theactual state of health of the river from all aspects of the river.At present, thedevelopment of river health assessment was just a few decades, but also formate anumber of methods, how to build a suitable index system based on the actual situationof the study area, and select the appropriate method to evaluate river health has beencurrently concerned about the river ecosystem researchers focus. The articlefrom the connotation of health river, to build river health evaluation system and selecttypical river to study, the main contents are as follows:Firstly, article from the domestic and international river health assessment Research,introduces the evaluation of river health research trends and some problems. Andbriefly elaborate the connotation of health of the river, from the ecological and humanuse of the river sustainable development and two angles to discriminate the river healthand find the critical factors which river evaluation needs.The selection of indicators and evaluation criteria developed is the key of affectingthe final results of river health assessment, based on the extensive research onliteratures to determine principles of the selection of indicators of river healthassessment and evaluation criteria and build a progressive layers of the five criteria ofthe target layer, river morphology, hydrological regime, water the state of theenvironment, aquatic life situation, social service function layer, contains18indicatorsindex layer evaluation system.DaXiHe River was selected as study area.According to the data about hydrology andwater quality in2011, and according to the actual situation of the DaXiHe river, fromthe18indicators in addition to the rare aquatic life survival situation, navigableguaranteed rate indicators, with the remaining16indicators constitute a the GreatRiver health evaluation index system, using AHP to determine the weights ofindicators and criteria layer were evaluated,the assessment result that DaXiHe Rivertotal score is58.8points and on the sub-health state. Three levels of the hydrologicalregime, river morphology, social service functions score is more than60points andon a healthy state, the hydrological regime score is88.1points and on the ideal state;Water Environment Situation and aquatic biological conditions is on the sub-healthyand unhealthy state.Through the analysis of the results of the evaluation, the river’s natural ecologicalrating is also less than60points and on the sub-health state, can also be seen from thefour criteria layer scores, the water quality of the river is greater impact on the final results of the evaluation, therefore, to maintain the river’s health, the water quality ofthe river first need to remain in a good state (where the functional areas required toachieve water quality goals).Based on the evaluation results of DaXiHe River, put forward some policies andmeasures to maintain river health. River health assessment is a systematic and complexissues, it needs a large number of studies to evaluating a river reasonable and accurate.
