Research On Universal Design Of Shenyang Urban Street Furniture

With the development of cities, urban street furniture has emerged and becomesnecessary elements as they combined product design and environment design. Due to thedifferences in each city, its development, history background, culture form also are not soidentical, the requirements of urban street furniture vary accordingly. Being an important partof urban space, street furniture should not only meet the basic needs of people, but also beattractive with the duty to display city characters, convey history and culture, as well asrepresenting the whole urban image.This paper focused on the Shenyang urban street furniture, take the typical commercialstreet of Shenyang City——Zhongjie as an example for in-depth case, to discuss how tobetter improve the functions of urban street furniture in such a particular environment. Withthe idea of “localization” and “universalization” in the urban construction of Shenyang City,and the aim to improve the utilization and spiritual functions of urban street furniture, thispaper started with explanation of street furniture, and classified them according to functionand environment so as to define the research range of this paper. Then the author analyzed thefunctions of street furniture and the relationship between furniture and people, furniture andcity, and came to the conclusion that a city and people there have different requirements inrespect of street furniture functions due to different spaces, which should be considered whendesigning the street furniture. Secondly, under the influence of Shenyang special regionalenvironment and culture, the author did research and analysis from the aspect of furnitureconfiguration category, conditions, actual usage and aesthetic appreciation, and summarizedthe important parts and key design elements.Finally, from the people-oriented design angle,in order to solve the problems in using street furniture, the author proposed to use universaldesign principles to design the Zhongjie street furniture of Shenyang City. The authorclassified and summarized the key design points based on universal design rules and put intopractice. The ultimate goal is to make comprehensive consideration of environmental and human factors, and satisfy the requirements of different people as much as possible; thereforepeople can better participate in social activities.
