The most remarkable characteristic difference of flat-top tower crane and ordinary tower crane is that it does not have the tower head or the tension bar. The jib is the important component of flat-top tower crane. The jib is withstanding the main work load of crane, the performance of jib has very tremendous impact on the complete machine performance of flat-top tower crane. Therefore, the important meaning on the analysis and optimization computation, sharpening the independent designed capacity, the change original imitation design method and forming the independent design system to flat-top tower crane jib is very obvious.This article uses principle design concept to the flat-top tower crane jib research, it takes the user’s needs of work amplitude and load as the actuation, based on crane’s computation operating mode, it has established mechanical model of jib, it takes the design criterion by the intensity and the rigidity, it has determined the stress condition and basic size of jib root and variable cross-section, and it includes:section height, main chord, web member and cross-sectional area of horizontal truss and so on. The computed result meets the project actual need. And provide the initial parameters for the following parametric design and optimization design work.It uses the union programming of vb.net and matlab, develops a kind of parametric design software, it has realized the output of jib stress condition and basic size regarding different jib length, lifting capacity and such initial input parameter, it improved the design quality and the rated capacity. It has completed this product conceptual design.The loads and restrictions of flat-top tower crane are simplified according to 《tandard of Crane Design》. Finite element methods ANSYS is utilized to establish the parametric model of crane jib, execute structural analysis, the state of static force response are gained under different work conditions. According to optimal design theory, to conceptual phase in parametric design output result, as optimization design starting value, used the lightest quality of the whole arm as the objective function, used the boom basic dimensions as the design variables, used strength and stiffness conditions as constraints, used ANSYS finite element software to achieve the optimal level head Crane, and analysis optimization process and the results. To meet the design requirements, reduced the weight of the boom by10.4%, obtained a better result to meet the engineering requirements.In summary, this article has developed the parametric and optimization design software of flat-top tower crane jib, and it realizes the entire design cycle from the principle to the parametric output again to the optimization design, it changes many years imitation design method and it has the universal guiding sense, it enables the design to be with the ductility and the succession, it has provided the method of reference for the design of flat-top tower crane jib, and it has done the beneficial work for the establishment independent design knowledge system.
