Post Occupancy Evaluation On Commercial Pedestrian Street Of Chongqing

As one of the most important component of the urban space environment, the emergence of commercial pedestrian street not only to some extent solved the problems of transport accessibility and shopping security within city commercial blocks, but also protected and stimulated the development of retail business in the commercial district. It has functioned as a perfect shopping destination and an ideal place for recreation and relaxation, a window to reflect the commercial culture and pop culture of the city, and most importantly, as barometer of the prosperity of urban economy.With the rapid development of economy and city, the quantity and scale of commercial pedestrian street has increased sharply. While some problems also emerged along with this development pattern, for example, local culture forfeit, lack of service facility and simple pilling up of constitute factors result from the rapid development. At present researches about the external environment constitute factors (space composition and landscape elements) of commercial pedestrian street have been made by some experts and scholars. However, few studies have ever, from the viewpoint of the users, referred to whether the commercial pedestrian street can fully meet the needs of the users.This thesis adopted the research method of Post Occupancy Evaluation, creatively dividing the commercial pedestrian street into three parts as the entrance, pedestrian street and square area, and selected behaviour observation method, questionnaire survey and interview method to make respective researches of the stream distribution and space activity types in each part of the five commercial pedestrian streets in the main urban areas of Chongqing City (Jie Fang Bei Shi Zi Jin Street, Guan Yin Bridge Pedestrian Street, Sha Ping Ba San Xia Square, Nan Ping Pedestrian Street and Yang Jia Ping Pedestrian Street), and also to make investigations on the user and usage mode of the commercial pedestrian street, the user’s degree of satisfaction about the constitute factors of the commercial pedestrian street, the maintenance and management of the commercial pedestrian street, aiming at figuring out the main existing problems of each of the five commercial pedestrian streets and furtherly putting forward to some suggestions which may provide reference to the exploration of a more humanized design guidelines of commercial pedestrian streets and to the design and reconstruction of commercial pedestrian streets in the future.Through surveys, researches and comprehensive analysis of the five commercial pedestrian streets in the main urban areas of Chongqing City, this thesis came to the following two conclusions:First, the primary function of commercial pedestrian street is commercial function. Thus, more attentions should be paid into the traffic convenience degree of the pedestrian street, the smooth degree of walking environment in the pedestrian street and the zero-blocking view to the stores to ensure the convenience of the users and consumers. Second, due to the user’s high demand of recreation, landscape and intercourse, on the basis of the realization of the commercial function of the pedestrian street more fine recreational facilities, elegant landscapes and diverse intercourse spaces shall be provided to increase the vitality in the pedestrian street and to promote the better realization of its commercial function.
