With the background of aging deeply, the contradiction between existing urban material space characteristics and the old people’s travel demand has been increasingly intensified in China. Not only brings the elderly increased travel distance and cost, the security threat from rapid motorization, but also aggravates the burden of public transport in the traffic peak time. The reasons of those are because the environment of residential district is being degraded as well as residential population aging, most of the facilities can’t satisfy the psychological needs and physiological changes of the elderly.Studies in abroad of residential districts with aging have formed systematic theory framework, however, in China, research just started in this area.At the present stage in China research on residential districts with the background of the aging population often ignores the analysis and investigation from the perspective of travel demand of the elderly. Therefore, from this study we focused on travel demand of the elderly as the breakthrough point to study the update design of residential districts. First of all, by researching a large number of related reference of home and aboard and combining with the on-the-spot investigation of some areas, we finally selected a representative residential area in Dalian as the study area. Based on the investigation of the current status of the space characteristics in the region, elder residents in the high aging rate residential district of Dalian participated in the present study through the activities log and cognitive map. Combing of environmental behavior and psychology related theory together, we analyzed the travel behavior characteristics of old people and understood the travel demand of the elderly. Both the existing problems and deficiencies on the material space characteristics in the residential area have been summarize. We expect our corresponding recommendations are able to play a reference role on residential planning design and construction under the background of aging in the future.
