Research Of The Contemporary Portuguese Architecture Based On Critical Regionalism

Portugal is a small country in Europe, we study the Portuguese architecture, not only because we do not understand the architectural culture in Portugal, which is located on the edge of Europe, but because we should understand, in the text of globalization, conflict between globalization and localization, as well as resistance between the edge and centre, how do the younger generation of Portuguese architects following Alvaro Siza explore the localization and generality of the architecture and explain in different ways in the respects of territory, history and technology on the land with strong city-countryside dichotomy characteristics, which is different from other industrialized countries in Europe. The contemporary Portuguese Regional architecture has a kind of strong national feature, though the younger generation architects have already gone beyond the tradition, from which they have never really broken away.The first part of this thesis (Chapter1) defines the relevant theories. Firstly, the author introduces the background and significance of the research, then explains the concepts of several facts, namely regional architecture, critical regionalism and phenomenology of architecture. Finally, through the analysis of the present situation of the domestic and foreign research, the author put forward the research steps and framework.The Second part of this thesis (Chapter2and Chapter3) carries on a comprehensive analysis of the unique background of Portugal architectural design as well as the creation ideas of Portugal regional architecture. In addition, the author expounds the development process of local architectural heritage of "The Porto School".The Third part of this thesis (Chapter4and Chapter5) serves as the core chapters. Through classified analysis of the cases of contemporary Portugal regional architecture, the author summarizes the creative connotations, principles as well as methods of contemporary Portugal regional architecture and enlightments toward Chinese regional architecture research.
