In recent years, as satellite navigation and positioning technology and urban geographic information systems are widely used, smart systems for urban traffic management have been developed rapidly. As an important component of a smart traffic management system, the modern vehicle navigation system, supported by a combination of related technologies of wireless communication, electronics, computer and traffic and transportation, plays a significant role in solving the traffic congestion problem. The vehicle location system is the basis of the implementation of smart vehicle navigation. Since our country developed late in the aspect, the application of vehicle positioning system we study is mainly concentrated in the aspects of the vehicle monitoring and scheduling systems. In this thesis we design and realize a GPS-based urban vehicle positioning and scheduling system, which consists of basic data management, GPS data management, dynamical monitoring, track tracing, and report statistics, to be satisfied varied basic needs of modern urban vehicle monitoring and scheduling. In the thesis it is introduced first the research significance and the development trend of vehicle positioning system. Then it is looked over the related theory and technology, the thought of map matching algorithm, and some relevant knowledge about coding languages applied in the software development environment, all used in the process of software design of the GPS positioning system. The map matching technology, indispensible for a vehicle navigation system and a precondition for a correct guiding of vehicles, has been especially investigated in an application-directed way.On such basis the design and realization process of the GPS urban vehicle positioning system is expatiated. The underlying algorithm design based on C#programming language, the interface design with the use of a series of convenient window interfaces provided by the.net framework, and a variety of simple and flexible measures for better usability and more interactivity supported by the window’s message mechanism, are included. Finally, the running environment and installation process of the vehicle positioning system are described.
