With the growing complexity of the grid structure, the increasing requirements of its operating as well as the maturity of data acquisition and communication means, the amount of the information that the grid need to collect and the can-be-collected information has also increased rapidly. The management modes of distribution network, such as the traditional written records, have been far from satisfying the demand for modern distribution management. As the situation requires, it is reasonable to start with the change of line management style to carry out the innovative research, and develop as well as applying the geographic information system. After utilizing the high-precision GPS satellites positioning instrument to get the measurement positioning of regional grid network junctions and have access to the detailed field data, the GPS-based GIS system will be established. And then the concluded and integrated data could be combined with the electronic map to set up a geographic information system of the regional transmission grid. Facing with different needs of each administrative department, GIS System can achieve a variety of functions. This system is designed to establish an all-around information system platform aiming at the integration of production and management among power supply enterprises, and to ensure the coordination and information sharing among various departments within these enterprises. At the same time, it is also useful to improve the working efficiency in terms of line data management, routine maintenance, fault treatment, construction and renovation work, etc. In the event of a failure, the location of faults can be determined quickly and the rush-repair personnel be quickly dispatched to deal with the emergency repair on the site; as a result, the electricity reliability can be improved. Meanwhile, the system can also offer all kinds of up-to-date geographic data for the decision-makers of enterprises, providing a premise for the accurate decision made by them.
