With the development of economy and improvement of technology, the aggravation of urban traffic congestion becomes a social issue for the development of cities over the world, as it causes increased vehicle delay, frequent traffic accidents, and worsening environment. However, the traditional mode of traffic control has not met the needs of the current urban transportation. Through the research and analysis of urban traffic, the thesis applies the fuzzy control theory and genetic algorithm to the research area of intersection signal control in order to decrease the average vehicle delay in intersection as short as possible. So it is significant to study the optimizing timing plan.Firstly, the basic theory of traffic signal control is introduced. This thesis introduces the basic parameters and evaluating indicator of urban traffic signal control, and also introduces the basic types of urban traffic signal control. By analyzing the signal control of the City Single Intersection, the literature [36] designs a two stages fuzzy control algorithm that adapt to the signal control of the City Single Intersection,and achieves good results. This thesis improves two stages fuzzy control algorithm of the literature [36] and designs a new two stages fuzzy control algorithm, and then uses the matlab simulation. Simulation results show that the average vehicle delay is lessened using this thesis’s two stages fuzzy control algorithm.Secondly, this thesis also studies the coordination control of urban two adjacent traffic intersections, and the literature [42] designs the coordination control algorithm that adapt to the coordination control of a primary and secondary roads urban two adjacent traffic intersections, and solves the coordination control of urban two adjacent traffic intersections to a certain extent. But the city roads have the intersections of not a primary and secondary roads, this thesis has analyzed the limitation of the literature [42], and then the three stages fuzzy coordinated controller that can achieve coordinated control of not a primary and secondary roads of the points of intersections is designed.Lastly, by analyzing the part of the urban trunk road traffic signal, this thesis establishes a basic traffic model that makes up the urban trunk road traffic signal the three adjacent intersection traffic intersection model. Then this thesis simulates the three adjacent intersection traffic intersections by using the three stages fuzzy coordinated controller. And by using adaptive genetic algorithm, the three stages fuzzy coordinated controller is optimized. Simulation results show that the three stages fuzzy coordinated controller after optimization can more decrease the average vehicle delay than before optimization.
