It is widely acknowledged that the ship fire, which occurs frequently in maritime perils and which results in severe disasters, is one of the most serious fires to control. The ship fire not only threatens the safety of the ship itself, sailors and cargos, but also results in casualties, damages to properties and environmental pollution. In the meantime, the ship fire has its unique characteristics. Given that there are a large variety of pipe lines and that the passages are narrow, it is extremely difficult to detect and put out the fire once the engine room is on fire. As a result, the fire often becomes so rampant as to lead to huge losses. It is therefore necessary to conduct a study of the ship fire and provide virtual scenarios because such a study is not only conducive to maritime education but also important for preventing and extinguishing ship fires. This report adopts the title "A Study on the Scenario Design of the Virtual Marine Engine Room" and employs several software tools such as the large eddy simulation technology,3D Max and XNA to simulate a fire hazard in a virtual marine engine room and to provide a reference point for maritime education and for studies on the ship fire. The studies are as follows:Firstly, starting from the basic governing equations, the Low Mach number equation of state, the Mixture fraction combustion model and the Radiation Model, I use the large eddy simulation technology to build the fire propagation mathematics model, which is suitable for the Low Mach number.Secondly, using the FDS program developed by NIST as a platform, I analyze the mathematical model and compare the empirical results with the virtual results. The outcome demonstrates that the construction of the mathematical models can predict the trend of the spreading fire, which can facilitate fire simulation.Thirdly, I consider the VLCC of Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Group Co, Ltd (GOSGLAD LAKE) as the parent ship and build the3D model of the steering gear room. Then I make the mappings of nameplates and dials as well as enhancements such as the rendering of the3D models.Fourthly, using the DNA3D game development as a platform, I apply the steering gear room3D model to the virtual environment, and I implement the Particle system to achieve the effects of fire burning and spreading, in order to create quasi real-life situations. The studies show that it is feasible to use the Microsoft XNA Game Studio goldmine development platform for the3D virtual reality development of three-dimensional simulators. Meanwhile, the advantages are as follows:the development methods are flexible, the expansion is easier, and the operation efficiency is much higher. The study and design of the system has a certain degree of innovation and practicality, as well as some guidance and reference value for the research and design of three-dimensional virtual reality technologies in the field of marine transportation studies.
