One major solution to urban congestion is an efficient and comfortable rail transit system. Transfer stations, as fundamental nodes of the Railway Transportation System (RTS), greatly influences the efficiency and comfort level of RTS.Despite the fact that passageway transfer stations often account for large proportions in the railway system, their poor convenience and comfort level is never to be ignored. The transfer capacity and comfort level of transfer stations form is the linchpin of RTS. Therefore, studying and optimizing the passageway transfer stations is of great importance. The paper summarizes the problems of some existing passageway transfer stations from the perspective of the passengers’demanding, and analyses how station design effects passengers’ actions and psychology. Additionally, the paper researches into the space attribute and facility allocation of stations (especially passageways). A feasible optimization strategy is obtained, and verified by Legion simulation. Thus, future reference to design of passageway transfer stations is provided. Basically, the paper is divided into the following parts:To begin with, statistics of the transfer stations in cities with well-developed railway systems (such as Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou) are collected; meanwhile more comprehensive research is given to the13passageway transfer stations in Shanghai. Thus detailed research data of the passenger flow volume and station building scale is acquired to from a basis for subsequent analogue simulation.Further, the paper presents different types of transfer stations, and analyzes the main components and typical streamlines of each type. An intensive study is made in terms of the adaption of each station category, and the space attribute and facility allocation of the station. Thus, an operable optimization strategy is provided, and verified by analogue simulation. Finally, case study of Xunlimen railway Station is conducted on the basis of the construction plans and digital statistics of transit passenger flow. Legion Analogue is used to simulate the operation of the station during rush hours. The conditions of significant nodes are analyzed and problems in this case are summarized.
