Transfer stations have played an important role in urban rail transit network because of the function of connecting different lines. Among all the transfer modes, transferring by passageway is a very common way. In Beijing subway transfer stations, the proportion of this transfer mode is nearly 50%. However, a serious problem that the design of transfer facilities doesn’t match the high density passenger flow brings bad influences to the transportation, operation and passengers’travel experiences. So it’s urgent to do the research of an appropriate design method of transfer facilities.Based on the situation of the passenger flow, characteristics of pedestrians, service level and capacities of facilities, an appropriate design method of transfer facilities was proposed, which is centering on improving service level and reducing crowd and queue. This paper specifically made the following research:At first, this paper analyzed the necessity of improving service level and reducing crowd and queue by introducing the background. The design method of facilities being used currently doesn’t satisfied the actual need of high density passenger flow because of the misunderstanding of the passengers’arrival. The passenger flow is not uniform within the whole process, so calculated based on the arrivals per hour will lead to average results.Combined with the structural of the station, style of the platform, interval of the train, position of the stairs and length of the passageway, a new design thought was proposed in this paper, which could make the design more sophisticated based on the arrivals per second.Secondly, capacities of different facilities on different service level were analyzed. The curves of speed-density and flow-density can be fit out based on the investigation of pedestrians’ characteristics. Then the service level can be divided by density and the capacities in the corresponded zone could be received.Third, the arrival model and design method were constructed. We can know the spatial and temporal distribution of passengers through the analysis of the whole transfer process. Considering of the difference between stairs, passageway, and platform, we need to get the arrivals per second and the accumulated number of arriving passengers per cycle. Based on that, we can get the specific design method of facilities according to the type and characteristics of passenger flows. At last, this paper selected an actual station as the research object. We collected data by investigation, simulated on the arrival model and calculated the sizes of facilities.Compared with the results of the method being used currently, we could draw a conclusion that the method being proposed in this paper is more reasonable according to the actual usage of the facilities. However, the design method in this paper does satisfy the high density passenger flow and can be a guidance for design, evaluation and reformation of subway stations.
