Four cultivars of Bromus inermis Leyss. which have been growing for many yearsin alpine region are observed to investigate their agronomic characters, grass yield, seed yield and nutrients and to evaluate their production performance under drylandagronomy at Xihai town, HaiBei Prefecture, Qinghai. The drought-resistance abilityare tested in seedling stage at the Qinghai Academy of Animal Science and VeterinaryMedicine. The main results are as follows:The four Bromus inermis Leyss. could survive winter in this region, showingstrong ability of drought, cold-resistance. Grass yield, hay yield and seed productionof Bromus inermis Leyss. cv. Gannong are the highest in the four cultivars, respectively reaching30136.11kg hm-2,14833.61kg hm-2and2116.20kg hm-2,indicating significant difference (P <0.01) compared to the other three cultivars.Bromus inermis Leyss. cv. Gannong and Bromus inermis Leyss. cv. Dryland were richin CP, reaching7.10%and6.38%respectively, while with lower ADF, respectively52.80%and52.59%and lower NDF respectively29.47%and30.39%. Both the twocultivars are high yield and quality forage.Successive level of drought are used to test the drought-resistance of seedling. The results indicate that the relative water content of leaves, cell membranepermeability, malondialdehyde and praline are reliable indexes to evaluate theseedling drought-resistance of the four Bromus inermis Leyss. And theirdrought-resistance ability are: Bromus inermis Leyss. cv. Gannong>Bromus inermisLeyss. cv. Dryland>Bromus inermis Leyss. cv.3-20>B04Bromus inermis Leyss..This study concludes that Bromus inermis Leyss. cv. Gannong and Bromus inermis Leyss. cv. Dryland are the high yield and quality forage with strong droughtresistance ability.
