Deer antlers are the only mammalian organs capable of regeneration annually. Rapid growth of deer antlers makes them potential models for studying tissue and organ regeneration. Although antlers are known to develop from pedicles, which arise from antlerogenic tissue of cranial periosteum, their detaled developmental process is far from elucidation. To study the developmental process of antlers and identify gene regulatory networks, we have established transcriptional expression profiling of red deer (Cervus elaphus) antlers by using Solexa Next-Generation Sequencing Platform. In this study,110402and5808full contigs(unigene) have been gained by Reference Assembly and De novo Assembly. Through Blast2go, we further found that these genes sequences of red deer owned high similarities with those of Human(Homo sapiens), Cow(Bos taurus) and Mice(Mus musculus). Both analysis of GO and COG disclosed that most contigs were related to cellular process, molecular function of binding, cell component, cell division and cell cycle control. The results would provides us solid data to understand deer antlers regeneration and further hints for new ways to deal with cartilage disease and understand the bone development of human being.
