To support the construction of Fern Garden in Nanjing Botanical Garden, Mem. Sun Yat-Sen, more than100species,10000ferns from Anhui, Zhenjiang, Jiangxi, Hu’nan, Fujian, Yunnan and Jiangsu were introduced. And meanwhile the phenology, biological characteristics, growth characteristics, cold resistance and drought tolerance were observed. the ornamental features and their application in garden were also discussed in this paper.To the propagation of the ferns introduced, the spores propagation of15species, such as Sphenomeris chinenses, Onychium japonicum, Macrothelypteris oligophlebia, Dryopteris erythrosora, D.championii, D. atrata, Hypolepis punctata, Coniogramme japonica, etc were carried out. The result showed that Sphenomeris chinenses, Macrothelypteris oligophlebia, Pieris multifida, and so on, were easier to germinate under the routine condition. And the Pieris multifida had the lagest germination rate of120young plants per pot; for Sphenomeris chinenses20young plants per pot and Onychium japonicum16young plants per pot. When the growing medium was perlite, sand and turves(1:1:1), the germination rate was the best; while the turves was the worst.The test of sporophyte transplanting into different substrate were conducted. And the result showed the substrate composed of perlite, sand and turves (1:1:1) was the best, and had the highest survival rate and growth rate,which could reach93.25-100%. The young plant grew fast, too. And the turves had the lowest survival rate and growth rate. The paper also elaborated the advantages and disadvantages of ramet based on the observation of ramet to D.erythrosora, D.championii, Polystichum polyblepharum etc. It was thought the ramet was available supplement for the spore propagation.Among the ferns introduced to greenhouse,36species survived and grew well. More than20species grew excellently. Some species can reproduce spontaneousnessly. And there were many application modes and played important roles in the sight of greenhouse. An investigation was conducted to the the habitat, species, resource, biological characteristics and distribution of the ferns in Nanjing Zijin Mountain. There are about more than70species of ferns, belonging to25families and36genera in Zijin Mountain, out of which Dryopteridaceae had the largest number. New distribution of2species were found in Jiangsu. The ecological types of the ferns were classified which were hydrophilous, terricolous, adnascent and climber. The survival environment of the ferns was also discussed in the paper.
