Nosocomial infection is a common problem in all hospitals, a variety of bacterialinfections, could easily lead to further health damage in patients especially. So it isimportant to exploit antibacterial properties of medical surface coating materials andequipment.Silk fibroin has good biocompatibility. To protect the silkworm smoothly through thepupal stage and eclosion into the physiological function of the moth, silk fibroin has amicro adjustment function of the surrounding environment. So it can inhibit themultiplication of bacteria, we call SF has antimicrobial activity.But the formability andflexibility performance of the regeneration silk fibroin materials is poor, so its applicationis limited.Besides,SF is expensive.The project intends to combine silk fibroin andpolyvinyl alcohol,to develop a new material with antibacterial properties. We obtained thesilk fibroin(SFP) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) blend films (SFP/PVA) with the method ofhigh concentration of salt solution to dissolve the silk fibroin fiber (SFP), neutral proteaseenzymatic and the water-phase blend. The characterization of SFP/PVA films ofmechanical properties proved that the blend films have good tensile strength and breakingstrength. The film with ratio of30/70has the best mechanical property. The results ofantibacterial performance showed that some proportion of the SFP/PVA blends have goodantibacterial performance to Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and the antibacterialratio can reach more than60%. The antibacterial ratio to aeruginous Pseudomonas couldbe achieved above30%. The blood compatibility test results show that the SFP/PVAblends have good compatibility. The hemolysis rate of the blends is less than5%, theplatelet consumption rate is less than20%, and they have a certain anti-clotting effect. Thefilm with ratio of30/70has the best blood compatibility. The L929cells were cultured,and assessed the ability of the SFP/PVA films to promote cell growth by MTT colorimetricassay method. The results showed that all of the SFP/PVA films had the function ofadhesion and promoting cell growth. And the SFP/PVA film at blending ratio of30/70hadthe excellent ability for promoting cell growth.Therefore,it is proved preliminarily as amedical catheter material or surface coating materials of medical devices.
