Research On Verb Usage In News Title

There have been some variations of verb usage in the news title .With the help of modern computer technology setting up the corpus of news headlines ,and by combining quantitative statistics and qualitative analysis method , this essay investigated the semantic and grammatical function changes of the verbs in news headlines,describing and analysising various changes from the angle of the construction grammar,and systematic functional linguistics,summing up the reasons of some changes of the verbs in the news headlines and their usage characteristics.The essay is divided into five chapters:The first chapter introduces the linguistics research on the news headline,the functional linguistics research,as well as theories and methods used in this article and the purposes and value of this research .The second chapter analyzes the semantic changes of the verbs in the news headlines based on corpus by using construction grammar,functional linguistics. The meaning of the verb in news headlines are divided into new meanings brought by near term overflowing , structural meaning given by the entire combination structure ,verb semantic enlarge or varing,the accidental arising and temporary rhetoric meaning based on the news discourse ,the unusal meaning based on the incongruity of the mode of prominence.The third chapter analyses the syntax variations based on the corpus study, firstly exploring the variation rule of combination of the verb and words of other part of speech: the unusual combination of verbs and nouns in the verb-object structure, modifier-modified structure, subject-predicate structure ,and the unusual combination of verbs and tense. This chapter also analyzes the weaken of the grammatical function of the verb and the economical form of the verb .The fourth chapter says that the semantics and syntax changes of the verbs in the headlines is subject to pragmatic,semantic,stylistic and cognitive and other factors.The fifth chapter summarizes the major research and conclusions presented in this paper.It also points out the shortcomings in the research and the follow-up study which will be conducted next.
