Listening comprehension is one of the most important basic skills that students haveto develop during the learning process in order to communicate. While at the same time itis also regarded as the weakest link in the whole chain for Chinese students. As a matter offact, improvements in listening comprehension are what we should put efforts on in thefirst place. However, most of the studies and researches in this area collect statistics andstate the necessity of teaching culture of the target language providing scattered or nomethodology in how to teach the target culture whatsoever. Thus the thesis will enrich ourexploration in the culture teaching and hopefully provide a new outlook in the futurelistening course practices. Moreover, the analysis results concluded from this investigationcan serve as references in methodology compilation in English listening course andbenefit college teachers in their culture teaching. What’s more, the author hopes it willbring more attention of domestic educators on the study of listening techniques and otheraspects in culture teaching, enriching and developing theoretical studies on cultureteaching in foreign language education. This study is mainly based on the schema theoryfrom the cultural recognition aspect with the assistance of Spitzberg and Cupach’s ICCtheory. They think that effectiveness, appropriateness and skills are important inimproving intercultural communication competence, which are the focus of the study inthis paper.With a combination of qualitative and quantitative research method, the author firstof all chooses a test paper to investigate subjects’ English listening proficiency. Thenchoose proper subjects who can meet the project requirements. After special training indeveloping students’ cultural recognition of target culture, retest and collect data. After thedata collection, the author makes a scientific analysis of them via Excel and somecomputer software.Main findings of the paper: the development of cultural recognition using skematadoes enhance students’ listening competence; theoretically, schema of the target culture originates in culture and formed in the development of cognition, therefore, it facilitatesthe process of cultural recognition; methodology to improve college students’ listeningcompetence can be diversified. Some findings are made on the rules to better understandand improve culture education, which inspires the author to put up with her constructiveideas to improve the teaching methodology in English listening course and CET.
