Intercultural communication is getting more and more necessaryand important with development of world economy and society. Howto achieve smooth and successful intercultural communicationbecomes an imperative. So, the cultivation of students’ interculturalcommunication competence (ICC) draws serious attention in collegeEnglish teaching and learning. This paper integrates meme theory withICC model to make in-depth investigation. The core of memetic theorylies in imitation and transmission, both of which affect foreign languagelearning.We invite college students who have passed CET4and CET6respectively to do this questionnaire. It reports that firstly, students indifferent groups acquire different levels of language competenceconforming to the levels of their certification. However, both groups ofstudents show similar trajectories in linguistic competence development.They are better to master grammar than listening and speakingcompetence. Secondly, students in CET6acquire more culturalknowledge than those in CET4. But neither of these two groups arecompetent intercultural communicators. Thirdly, all of students have thesense of imitation during their learning process. The majority of studentstend to believe that imitation or recitation is helpful for improving ICC.In sum, meme shapes both language and culture learning. Culturalcontext is significant to college students’ ICC development. |
