By making a contrastive analysis of the English version and Chinese version ofThe Trumpet of the Swan, this thesis aims to study Ren Rongrong’s translationtechniques on children’s literature. As a renowned children’s literature translator in China, Ren Rongrong hasintroduced more than three hundred children’s literary works, among which one of themost popular is The Trumpet of the Swan. The success of his novel is due to manyreasons, and one of them is his application of translation techniques. Under the guidanceof reader-centered principle, the aim of Ren Rongrong’s translation is to amuse children. In accordance with the visual, audial and oral aesthetic needs of the readers, histranslation fully presents the ideology of the Reception Theory. Reception theoryemphasizes the role of readers and believes that the reader is not the passive andunimportant factor in the overall relation of the author-the text-the reader. On thecontrary, the literary work can achieve its aesthetic value and social function only whenthe reader understands and accepts it.This thesis, focuses on the analysis of English and Chinese version of The Trumpetof the Swan, uncovers the reader-centered translation awareness as well as the aestheticcomponents which should be flexibly represented in translations, and analyses RenRongrong’s translation techniques on syntactic level, lexical level, rhetorical level andcultural level. Discoveries are made through the analysis. Firstly, Ren Rongrongintroduces the Reception Theory into children’s literature translation; Secondly, by ananalysis of The Trumpet of the Swan, it is found that Ren Rongrong formed his owntranslation techniques. Ren Rongrong’s translation techniques are that he simplifies thesentence structures in short sentences and he visualizes the expressions by usingrepetitions, onomatopoeias and auxiliary words. Meanwhile, he preserves musicalbeauty of the sentences in rhythmic sentences, colloquial linguistic styles and hereduces the cultural gaps by using domestication and omission.Ren Rongrong’s children’s literature translation in view of the specificcharacteristics of its target readers happens to go with Reception Theory which providesa brand-new theoretical perspective for the research of children’s literature translationand has great inspiration for the study of children’s literature translation.
