More and more foreign works of the children’s literature have been introducedinto China in recent years, and they are usually translated by adult translators, most ofwhom translate with an adult-tone, neglecting the special characteristics of thechildren readers. Ren Rongrong, who is regarded as the leading authority in thetranslation field of the children’s literature in contemporary China, devotes almost allhis efforts to the translation of children’s literature. Little research has been made uptill now, however, on such an outstanding translator with rich experience in translating.Accordingly, this thesis has made a systematic research on Ren Rongrong’stranslation strategies in order to throw some light on the translation of the children’sliterature in the future.Firstly, the thesis briefly introduces Ren Rongrong’s life experience andtranslation activities, indicating the necessity and significance of the study. Then thetheoretical basis is expounded based on the Reception Theory and Ren Rongrong’stranslation principles included. Lastly, the author makes a comparative study betweenRen Rongrong’s translation and Kang Xin’s translation of Charlotte’s Web, to explorehow Ren Rongrong’s translation strategies are embodied in his translation activities. In her survey, the author not only uses questionnaires but also makes interviews tofind out which version is more acceptable and preferred by children. Through the survey of over two hundred students in the middle and primary schools and thecomparative analysis of the two versions, the author concludes that Ren Rongrong’sversion is more acceptable to children than Kang Xin’s. Reader-orientation can beobviously seen in Ren Rongrong’s translation. He chooses colloquial and concretewords instead of formal and abstract ones. He exerts himself to make the target textvivid, by using brief and short sentences rather than complex ones and combiningdomestication and foreignization in translating culture. In addition, the author also finds some deficiencies in Ren Rongrong’stranslation, but the defects cannot obscure the virtues. In short, Ren Rongrong’stranslation strategies play an important role in promoting the development of thetranslation of the children’s literature in China.
