In order to break the imbalance among cultures in term of quantity of input andoutput during the process of translation and to resist western cultural colonizing,experts in post-colonial studies represented by Homi·Bhabha have introduced theconcept of "hybridity" into the field of translation studies, suggesting that during theprocess of translation, the elements of the "otherness" should be kept. And the theoryof hybridity is of great significance to the development of target language and cultureas well as that of source language and culture. On one hand, hybrid translation workscan enrich the target language and culture, and on the other hand, hybrid translationworks can enlarge the influence of source language and culture.The theory of hybridity gives translators a large space to display their subjectivity.And translators are no longer viewed as machines of language transmission but theactive contributors in cultural building and development. And under the theory ofhybridity, translators’ subjectivity can be shown in two aspects, and they aretranslators as the decision-makers of the degree of hybridity of their translations aswell as translators as the controller of the degree of hybridity of their translations.So this paper aims to examine the display of translators’ subjectivity under thetheory of hybridity with the English version of Flowers in the Mirror as a case study. |
