This paper views anticipation as a necessary strategy in simultaneous interpreting, and believes that by taking advantage of the anticipatory strategy, the quality andefficiency of simultaneous interpreting output can be greatly improved. The paper isbased on the theoretical framework that integrates Gile’s effort model, Chernov’sprobability-prediction model and Firth’s context theory. These theories serve to provethe importance and feasibility of anticipation in simultaneous interpreting, and furtherbreed the approaches to improve the interpreter’s anticipation ability.Wilss and Lederer (1978) and Gile (1995) distinguished between linguisticanticipation and extra-linguistic anticipation. This is the adopted way of classificationof anticipation in this thesis. And under the guidance of the context theory, the authorventures to assume that linguistic anticipation can be achieved from the perspectivesof long-term knowledge accumulation and pre-task preparation, while extra-linguisticanticipation from event background, occasion and participants. This paper adopts the experimental way to conduct the study, which involvestwo tests including three testees and two pieces of audio materials. Throughcomparing and analyzing the results of the two tests from the aspects of times, genresand causes of anticipation, the author manages to prove that the above-mentioned fivemethods, i.e. knowledge accumulation, pre-task preparation, event background, occasion and participants can be truly applied to increase the interpreter’s anticipationcompetence. And hence improve the interpreting output quality. Eventually, theassumption of the author turns out to be positive and it is also found that humanbeings are born with the ability of anticipation, but the consciousness of anticipationshould be fostered intentionally. Moreover, it seems that linguistic anticipation is tendto be more frequently employed when implementing a simultaneous interpretingmission, and thus is more useful in some degree.
