A Relevance-Theoretical Account Of Fuzziness In Press Conference Interpretation

This thesis is about the analysis of fuzziness in press conference interpretation(PCI) from the perspective of Relevance Theory. The author attempts to prove thefeasibility of applying Relevance Theory to interpretation and put forward practicalapproaches of interpreting fuzziness under the circumstances of PC. The thesis tries tobreak the rigid stereotype held long by traditional translation scholars and criticstowards Relevance Theory in translation of written forms and give new insights to theapplication of Relevance Theory to a commonly met languagephenomenon—fuzziness and its interpretation.There are six parts in this thesis. The thesis starts with a brief introduction to theresearch objective, the methodology, the structure and the significance of the presentresearch. In part two, the thesis presents the historical development of fuzziness,interpretation and Relevance Theory so as to lay a profound knowledge basis for lattertwo parts. Then in part three, a theoretical framework is built in which the basicfeatures and functions of fuzziness in PCI and Relevance Theory are offered. Part fourfocuses on the feasibility of applying Relevance Theory to analyzing fuzziness in PCI,which gives a natural lead to the next part. Part five is the main body of this study,with data collection and data analysis being the focus. Finally, the thesis ends in partsix with the conclusion that the interpretation of fuzziness in light of RelevanceTheory not only exists, but also is desired to achieve similar contextual effectsbetween the source language and target language, therefore, interpretation qualitycould be finally maintained.It is made clear that the exertion of fuzziness in PCI does not sabotage thequality of interpretation; rather, it brings better interpretation performance. Based onthis, It is suggested that the exertion of fuzziness should be recognized andencouraged in a proper way. Further, the analysis of fuzziness under the framework ofRelevance Theory can be used to evaluate the quality of interpretation.
