Negation is a common language phenomenon. It generally exists in Chinese andEnglish. Implied negation is also a kind of negation, and it belongs to negation. Theimportance of negation in the language means that implied negation is of importanceas well. Under the circumstance of more frequently exchange of the world today, it’svaluable to contrast the implied negation of Chinese and English, and this is why Ichoose this topic as the theme of my paper.Contrast is an important way for people to know the world; meanwhile, it’s theway to study different kind of languages. Contrastive study is this kind of study that isto contrast two or more than two different languages and find out the similarities anddifferences between them, especially the differences. It’s quite a good way to study theimplied negation of Chinese and English. So I make it as the main study method ofthis paper.The relevance theory is a quite hot study topic of cognitive linguistic recently,and it is a suitable theory to explain the implied negation. Considering all about this, Ichoose it as the theory basis of this paper. In this paper, I describe and analyze theimplied negation clearly through it, then sum up the similarities and differences aboutthe structure, content, communication subject and function of the implied negationbetween Chinese and English. In the end, I give out my explanations to thesimilarities and differences from three aspects: language, culture and the thinking ofmankind.
