The Situation Investigation On Personality Characteristics And Mental Health Of Tibetan Teenagers

The research utilized the stratified random sampling method andinvestigated the Tibetan middle school students contains junior one,junior second, junior third, senior one, senior second and senior thirdsubjects from Tibetan districts such as Lhasa, Nagqu, Lhoka, Shigatse,Qamdo, Nyingchi and so on; outside of Tibet such as Aba in Sichuan,Gannan in Gansu, Hainan in Qinghai and so on. Meanwhile, weinvestigated the Tibetan undergraduates from Tibet university, Tibetnational college, Tibet agriculture and animal husbandry college, Qinghainational college and Northwestern national college and so on. Based onthe character of Tibetan society, culture and history, the research chosethe subjects from different area for investigation, trying to explore theTibetan adolescents’ personality traits, mental health status and therelations between them. In order to know the Tibetan adolescents’personality traits and mental health status more clearly, the researchutilized the Tibetan and Chinese bilingual Eysenck PersonalityQuestionnaire for children to investigate2241Tibetan middle schoolstudents to survey their personality traits and the Tibetan and Chinesebilingual Eysenck Personality Questionnaire for adult to investigate1944Tibetan undergraduates to survey their personality traits. Besides, wechose the Tibetan and Chinese bilingual Mental Health Questionnaire for Chinese middle school students to investigate1121Tibetan middle schoolstudents to survey their mental health status. We utilized the SCL-90mental health scale to investigate971Tibetan undergraduates to surveytheir mental health status. According to these researches, we attempted toexplore the Tibetan adolescents’ personality traits, mental health statusand the relations between them. The result shows:(1) In the introversion-extroversion subscale, accumulative30%ofthe Tibetan middle school students tend to be introverted and typicalintroverted; in the neuroticism subscale, accumulative26.8%of theTibetan middle school students tend to be neurotic and typical neurotic; inthe psychoticism subscale, accumulative30.8%of the Tibetan middleschool students tend to be psychotic and clearly psychotic; in the liesubscale, accumulative25.2%of the Tibetan middle school students tendto conceal.The factors influenced the psychoticism of the Tibetan middleschool students involve sex and their location elevation; the factorsinfluenced the introversion-extroversion of the Tibetan middle schoolstudents involve sex, grade and the number of Han nationality friend; thefactors influenced the neuroticism of the Tibetan middle school studentsinvolve sex, class composition, school composition, Chinese proficiencyand elevation; the factors influenced the concealing of the Tibetan middleschool students involve inside/outside of Tibetan, sex, the number of Han nationality friend, Chinese proficiency and elevation.(2) Compared with the peer norm, the lie score of Tibetanundergraduates is higher than the norm; the Tibetan undergraduates(expect for16-19females) displayed extroversion; the Tibetan femaleundergraduates, over20years old, showed instable emotion comparedwith common people.The factors The factors influenced the psychoticism of the Tibetanundergraduates involve Chinese proficiency, the number of Hannationality friend and their family residence; the factors influenced theintroversion-extroversion of the Tibetan undergraduates involve Chineseproficiency, the number of Han nationality friend and inside/outside ofTibet; the factors influenced the neuroticism of the Tibetanundergraduates involve the number of Han nationality friend, consideringHan nationality acceptance for Tibetan and Chinese proficiency; thefactors influenced the concealing of the Tibetan undergraduates involvethe number of Han nationality friend, fathers’ literacy, family residenceand inside/outside of Tibet.(3) According to the research, we found that overall70.3%of theTibetan middle school students present mental health problems indifferent degree. Among the ten health factors, except obsession andanxiety factors, the gender difference is significantly remarkable betweenthe Tibetan middle school students and the score of males is strikingly higher than females. The Tibetan junior school freshmen present moremental problems versus other grades. Moreover, the family residence, thenumber of Han nationality friend, class composition and schoolcomposition factors affect the Tibetan middle school students’ mentalhealth.(4) In the Tibetan undergraduates masculine individual,6.2%-16.5%of them present masculine in the SCL-90factors. The mental healthproblems of Tibetan undergraduates are more serious than adolescentnorm. There is no clearly difference between inside and outside of Tibetamong the Tibetan undergraduates. The females’ mental health conditionis worse than the males. The Tibetan undergraduates from the countryside,their mental health condition is worst. The Tibetan undergraduate whohave more Han nationality friends show better mental health conditionthan that of less Han nationality friends. The class and schoolcomposition shows no clear influence in the mental health. Thesophomore Tibetan undergraduates’ mental health condition is worst. TheTibetan undergraduates’ mental health condition whose location elevationis more than3000m is better than that of lower than3000m elevation.The higher Tibetan undergraduates whose parent has higher literacy showbetter mental health condition than that of lower literacy parents.(5) According to the relation analysis, we can conclude that Tibetanmiddle school students’ introversion-extroversion and psychoticism personality are positively correlated with all the dimensions of mentalhealth. In other words, the more extroverted, the higher psychoticismscore(instable emotion), the scores of the Tibetan middle school studentare higher(mental health is worse). The Tibetan undergraduates’introversion-extroversion, psychoticism and concealing personality areremarkably related with all the dimensions of mental health; and theintroversion-extroversion and concealing personality are negativecorrelated with all the dimensions of mental health psychoticismpersonality are positively correlated with all the dimensions of mentalhealth.
