The pro-dialect movies have become increasingly frequent since1990s inChinese contemporary movie history. This phenomenon still exists even today, so thisphenomenon and its cultural reasons have attracted the attention of researchers. In theprocess of the author’s combing materials, the author has found that the researches ofdialectal movies mostly concentrated in the aspect of the value of dialects to themovies. Some other researches discussed the significance of the dialectal movie fromthe perspectives of linguistics and sociology. However, this paper focuses on the linkamong the dialect, identity and the culture on the basis of the former researches,striving to dig out the deeping cultural connotation of dialects in Chinesecontemporary movies.In the first chapter, the rise and development of dialects in contemporary Chinesemovies are summarized and classified. In the second chapter, the selected concretemovies demonstrate the construction, manifestation and reproduction of socialenvironment by dialects. In the third chapter, the author selected the tight linkbetween dialects and identity as a starting point and analyzed the relationship betweensocial culture identity and character represented by dialects in contemporary movies,taking gender opposition, distinction of social stratum, cultural conflict and characterconflict for examples. In chapter four, the current value, dilemma and outlet ofdialects in movies are briefly summarized.Dialects can do great help to movies. The regional culture behind them and thecultural convergence or contradict produced by them bring a deeper level of culturalconnotation to movies. However, there still are some superficial movies which caterto the markets with vulgar tastes by using dialects. Thus, how to standardize the usageof dialects in movies and coordinate the dialects and the images in movies are also theobjects of this paper.
