Chinese mountains-and –waters painting appeared in Wei and Jin dynasties,became mature in Sui and Tang dynasties and flourished in the Five dynasties,Song and Yuan dynasties.Going through dynasties like Qing,the Republic of China,modern times and contemporary times,Chinese mountains-and-waters paintings have become a very important part of Chinese art.Among them,the Chinese mountains-and-waters paintings of scroll type is a sparkling pearl,carrying Chinese aesthetic ideal,universe conception and philosophical wisdom and it is an unique artistic form with Chinese characteristic all over the world.Chinese mountains-and-waters painting of scroll type is unique in its breath of the painting as a narrow and long carrier providing enough space to show Xuncius' s artistic ideas that beauty cannot be presented in a partial and non-essential scenery.Besides,the many a scholar and literati and officialdom in feudal China would like to practice this kind of painting,Chinese mountains-and-waters painting has contained some “poetic feature”.Scrolls of mountains-and-waters painting has embraced a cultural connotation that the knowledge of an erudite should be as profound as possible and as elaborate as enough,to present not only the macro view but also can show the details in a micro point.This has fully shown the deep relationships between the Chinese mountains-and-waters painting of scroll type and Chinese culture.From Luoshen Appraisal Painting made by Gu Kaizhi we can see the clue that Chinese painting' spatial imagination and painting skills lie in showing a natural landscape in thousand li in a paper of several meters.Until the Preface For Landscape Painting made by Chao Zongbing in the South dynasties has folly shown the spatial awareness of a vertical stroke standing for a cliff of thousand meter and horizontal strokes standing for a distance of hundred li.Chinese mountains-and-waters paintings has aesthetic ideal that the painting presents a view which is suitable for living and sightseeing and this aesthetic ideal can be fully manifested through Chinese mountains-and-waters of scroll typeChinese scholars has always been interested in expressing thoughts through praising natural views like the passion is as strong as the mountain when climb,and the thought is springing up when facing a sea.Alike,the mountains-and-waters painting also contains the painter's ideas and thoughts,and the painter has put his perception into the view which he is facing.Endowing the mountains and waters with his emotion and affection creates a fusion of feelings with the natural setting.Guo Xi in his Nuances in Landscape Paintings expressed his feeling changed with the season's alternation in such sentences as “the smoke mist surrounding the mountains and waters differs from different seasons.The smoke mist haunting the mountains and waters seems simply elegant in spring,watery green in summer,lightly makeup in autumn and dismally sleepy in winter”.All these sentences have shown that how deep he watched the thing he drew and how authentic his feeling was.Shi Tao another painting master said “You can start to make a draft of Mountains-and-waters painting until you have mastered all the unique features of the wonderful mountains” which is proved by one of his paintings.The saying shows that he has recognized the dialectical relationship between the mountains,waters and ego.So that he has reached up to a level where the ego as a subject and mountains as an object communicate and combine one another.The significance of application of scroll in Chinese mountains-and-waters painting has been discussed in this thesis through analysis of the large and all-inclusive artistic thoughts,free imaginary artistic ideal,special time-space concept and unique appreciation convention and presentation mode.Besides,this thesis focuses on exploring the deep relationship between the Chinese scroll mountains-and-waters painting and Chinese traditional culture,researching the influence of the classic painting among the Chinese scroll mountains-and-waters paintings from Tang and Song dynasties to the contemporary times,and seeking for the universal law formed in the creation of Chinese scroll mountains-and-waters painting and its enlightenment to the creation of mountains-and waters paintings creation at present.
