Documentary and feature film are two basic morphologies of film. but the variouslimitations of documentary lead it to very different situation in the film and televisionindustry compared with feature film. However, documentary, with various limitations,enjoys quite different situation in film and TV industry, compared with feature film.Actually, some film directors started their careers by making documentary but finallyabandoned it and then shifted to creation of feature film. While some film makers aretrying to break the boundaries of documentary and feature films, and make innovationswhen they realized the respective characteristic advantages of documentary and featurefilm. As a result, documentary with story-oriented tendency and feature film withrecord-oriented tendency are two trends in current film and TV development. This papermade a profound study on the phenomenon, clarifies the influence of the documentaryon the directors’ feature film creation, and points out that the rich and variedcharacteristics of the changes of current film, which can provide some referentialdirection to the Chinese young film directors.The paper is divided into the following sections:Firstly, Introduction part focuses on the current situation of study on the interactionof both documentary and feature film and the research methods of this paper.Based on the nature of film language, the second part analyzes intrinsic dimensionof films, discusses nature of documentaries and feature films and explains the respectiveperformance characteristics and the causes of documentaries with story-orientedtendency and feature films with record-oriented tendency.The third part conducts the comparative analysis on documentary and feature filmagainst with, and then finds out the reference to documentaries of feature films andpersonal creation. Taking oral historical works of Jia Zhangke, a new generation director,who obscure the boundaries of documentaries and feature films as example to makecomparative study, the paper presents the trend of diversified development of currentfilm and television art.The forth part illustrates case studies on the film directors who have dual creativeexperience, and their works. This paper, focusing on Chinese new generation of filmdirectors, selects film masters and their works in the history of film as case in adiachronic way and HK and Taiwan film directors and their works and case in a synchronic way. By doing this, the author found out the influence of design andexpressing way and personalized features of film directors who produce feature filmsand have documentary experience.Finally, based on the documentary nature of film art, the paper highlight thatrespect for life is the dominant tendency of the new film, and film producer should baseon documentaries, grasp the ratio of real and fictional to make feature films with gloryand diversity.
