With the increasing requirement for improving the students’ Englishcomprehensive quality in modern society, effective English reading ability becomesone of the basic qualities for every student to acquire knowledge and keep makingprogress. The Covertly stratified teaching refers to that teacher uses the inner scalemethod to divide the students into different groups after full consideration of them inclass. Each group consists of students in similar levels. Teachers set up different levelsof teaching objectives, teaching strategies and evaluation methods in accordance withdevelopment requirements of all levels of learners in the classroom teaching process.This study explores the covertly stratified teaching model on the training ofcollege students’ autonomous reading ability through the experimental method. Thisexperiment which lasts for one semester is carried out in two reading classes forsophomores in Xi’an Peihua College. The covertly stratified teaching model and thetraditional teaching model are adopted respectively by the experimental class andcontrol class to make a contrast. The students’ reading abilities are tested and thequestionnaires are used to investigate the students’ autonomous reading ability beforeand after this experiment. Statistical software SPSS19.0is used to analyze theexperimental data and the following conclusion are drawn: the students inexperimental class are not only significantly superior to students in control class onEnglish reading attitude, motivation, strategy, method, monitoring and evaluation butalso improve their reading grades evidently after this experiment.. Therefore, covertlystratified teaching model can not only effectively enhance students’ autonomousreading skills, but also can improve the reading grades of the students significantly.The result of the experiment meets the expectation.
