This paper contrasts new nouns of Chinese and Thai and makes questions about Chinese and Thai students’comprehension ability of new words surveyed. There are several contrastive items included when I contrast new words of Chinese and Thai, such as types, syllables, patterns, loanwords and so on. With the development of ages, there will be new words, new literary styles and changes on figures of speech appearing at every age. According to the reasons of these new words’emergence, the main types of Chinese new words are newly created words, abbreviated words, and lettered words and so on. The difference of types of new words between Thai and Chinese is that there is no writing style of lettered words in Thai, while Thai has quoted grammar coinage of loanwords, ie, affix and the Sa-ma structure. The new words in Chinese and Thai both have the trend of simplification. A great amount of the new words have few syllables, the most of which are disyllabic new words. In Chinese new words, the largest proportion of patterns is new words with prefixes, followed by the suffixes and abbreviations and others. In Thai, transliteration is the most, after that prefixes and combination of concepts and sound patterns. In all the languages of loanwords, Chinese and Thai both have English, Japanese; Chinese from Hong Kong and Taiwan, besides, Thai has loanwords from French and Korean. In this paper, I made questionnaires of Thai students’comprehension ability about Chinese new words. It turned out that more subjects chose right between the options about newly created words. They obtain the meanings of new words mainly by movies and internet. When it comes to new Chinese words from loanwords, Thai students don’t have sufficient ability to understand them. Because the ways of loanwords integrating into Chinese are different from the ways in Thai which makes them wrong when choosing. About the abbreviated ways in Chinese, the subjects chose right more with contexts. Finally, my study came to the following conclusions about Thai students’understanding of Chinese new words. First, having new words is a common trend for both Chinese and Thai. Second, the syllables of these new words are simplifying. Third, the languages and ways of loanwords in Chinese and Thai have both similarity and difference.
