The focus of the current paper falls on the national character in Lao She’s late creation based on the analysis of his late writings under the background of the time (from 1949-1966). The analysis mainly covers three aspects:first, the national character analyzed from the writings’main ideas, character image and readers’awareness of“for people”; second, the interpretation of the contradiction of national character; third, the meaning of national character to Lao She’s late literary creation. The "Introduction" mainly introduces the time background during 1949-1966 and the definition of national character.Chapter one is the analysis of the contents of national character writing. It has three sub-chapters, which are the main thoughts of Lao She’s late creations, character image established and readers’awareness of“for people”. Lao She’s late creations apparently show the national character from the themes of the creations, construction of new republic’s people and readers who consciously consider people in the writings themselves.Chapter two is about the contradiction of national character writing. After the founding of P.R.C., Lao She took the responsibility to write for people. Among the writers for people, Lao She is the most productive. However, we found there was a contradiction between commonness and individuation under the trend to write for people after a close look at Lao She’s writings and notes. The contradiction was reflected on his creating ideas, themes and choice of genres. Lao She closely followed the trend and created works for people and for the Party. At the same time, these works expressed that creation must follow the literary rules and meet the writers’psychological views. The contradiction was eased in a relatively loosen background for creation when writers had the freedom of writing around 1960. Due to this, Lao She created“Beneath the Red Banner”, an equivalence of“The Yellow Storm”over the contradiction of national character writing. The creation of "Beneath the Red Banner" indicates that Lao She overcame the contradiction between individuation and the time requirement, which directed him to his own spirit home in his last few years.Chapter three talks about the meaning of national character to Lao She’s late literary creations. Lao She was already a famous novelist before the founding of P.R.C. and wrote lots of dramas and folk art which gained some reputation. These dramas and folk art created under the influence of“for people”writing make Lao She a dramatist and a pioneer of folk art. This change of his identity is the meaning of national character to Lao She’s late creations. After the founding of the P.R.C., Lao She created around 20 dramas, all applauded and welcome by people. These dramas are close to people’s life, and these close-to-people dramas surely make him a dramatist. Besides, Lao She also brought innovation to the folk art and started a new future for folk art. He not only saved the folk art, but also made it serve the people and the politics. He is truly a pioneer of folk art thanks to his innovation.
