Optimization Strategies For Online E-C Simultaneous Interpretation With Text From The Perspective Of Gile’s Effort Model

Academic conferences are highly specialized and information-intensive events.Typically,large international academic conferences adopt simultaneous interpretation with text,while less research has been conducted on it.It is generally accepted that interpreters only need to read a prepared script during the interpreting activity.However,the speaker may not deliver a speech according to the script on the spot.Therefore,how to effectively utilize the script and enhance the quality of interpretation are urgent problems to be solved in simultaneous interpretation with text.The report focuses on an English-Chinese simultaneous interpretation with text that was performed by the interpreter for a speaker at the 49 th International Academy of Ceramics.The theme is Ceramic Practice in Health Research: Making Public Art in a Hospital.The author analyzes the factors that affect the quality of interpretation,including excessive technical terms,long sentences,the speaker’s unstable speech speed,the accent of the speaker,and the interpreter’s over-reliance on the text.These factors pose problems for the interpreter,such as missing information and poor quality of interpretation.Guided by Gile’s Effort Model,the author proposes the following interpretation strategies: adequate preparation,syntactic linearity,deduction,omission,and reasonable allocation of effort in reading the text.The use of these strategies helps the interpreter to effectively allocate cognitive resources in listening and analysis,short-term memory,reading,speech production,and coordination.Therefore,the interpreter’s limited efforts can be used reasonably within a short period of time.The goal of optimizing the quality of interpretation will be achieved.The findings of this report will be of valuable reference for novice interpreters.
