With the frequent exchanges between China and the rest of the world, there are more and more international conferences held in China and more demands for interpretation. Simultaneous interpretation is one of the popular language services in many major international conferences. In this paper, Daniel Gile's Effort Model theory (1995) is introduced to serve as the theoretical framework. Through empirical study, the paper analyzes the relationship between segmentation and the quality of English-Chinese simultaneous interpretation with text and without text, and also explores the possible reasons. In so doing, interpreters can make better use of the text and segmentation to improve their interpretation performances. The study shows that, generally, segmentation is more frequently used in interpretation with text than in interpretation without text, and the interpreting quality is better in interpretation with text. In interpretation with text, segmentation and interpreting quality have no significant correlation. In interpretation without text, they have significant positive correlation. The paper consists of five chapters. The first chapter presents important concepts of simultaneous interpretation and segmentation. Chapter two is the part of literature review. Daniel Gile's Effort Model theory is introduced in chapter three to theoretically support the paper. Chapter four is related to the experiment. In chapter five, the experimental data are analyzed to answer the questions that have been raised. The last chapter comes to a conclusion. This paper aims to help interpretation learners and practitioners enhance their performance with the help of segmentation.
