Gestalt psychology is the theoretical basis of visual thinking, the " Gestalt " it studies isthe visual perception of activities organized by the experience of the overall structure. The "Gestalt " in Gestalt psychology has two basic characteristics: one is that the whole does notequal the sum of its parts; the second refers the heterogeneity and isomorphs, ie themodulation of the Gestalt. The being and not being in graphic design proposed in this paperrefers the creative process of objective design patterns and subjective design artisticconception. The article explained the “Gestalt” concepts in Gestalt psychology, the principlesof visual thinking, and the origin of the ideas of being and not being in graphic design,particularly gave a comparative analysis of the basic principles of Gestalt and the being andnot being of graphic design and believes that the theoretical exploration of the aspects as therelationship between graphics and background, graphic form and meaning and the visualthinking of graphic creation should be based on the Gestalt figure-ground relationship, imagethinking and isomorphism. Meanwhile, the article also discusses the aesthetic value of thebeing and not being in the Gestalt and graphic design. Through the above argument, theauthor sought to explain that the graphic design should be completed on the basis of specificinformation dissemination, and further pursue the performance of culture and spiritual aspects.Therefore, the designers should study Formal characteristics of Gestalt theory and visualthinking in depth, and give new vitality and life for graphic design with the times going on.
