The in-depth development of economic globalization has fueled the economic boom and extensive international cooperation and communication in China, so qualified interpreters are needed in an increasing number by various industries. In the meantime, due to the development of various communication technologies, new forms of interpreting such as teleconference interpreting and media interpreting have been gaining much more popularity, especially telephone interpreting (TI), which has higher efficiency and flexibility, but lower cost. It transforms a source language into the target language without being restricted by time or space, and allows the organizations to be far more responsive to the needs of non-English speakers. With its nearly four decadesā€™development, TI has been used in various domains in many countries and regions. However, TI is still in its rudimentary period in China, receiving inadequate attention and lacking comprehensive and professional studies. Therefore, the study of TI in China brings about a great challenge as well as an opportunity to cultivate interpreters in terms of both quality and quantity. This experiment-oriented thesis consists of four chapters. In the first place, it introduces the history, the actual operation and the present telephone interpreting market at home and abroad. In order to make some comparisons, the experiment includes two groups of telephone interpreting and one group of on-site consecutive interpreting, the process of which is described explicitly in the second chapter. In the third chapter, the experiment results are analyzed and compared to figure out the advantages as well as disadvantages of telephone interpreting, and finally give some suggestions to the telephone interpreting learners in the last chapter to meet the actual demands of the market and improve each link of interperting teaching, cultivating professional, high level, and practical talents, which is the goal of MTI teaching.
