A Study Of News Translation From The Perspective Of Text Typology

News, as media for the foreigners to get to know China and the same forChinese to know the world well, plays an important role in modern society. Therefore,news translation manifests growing significance in the transmission of informationunder such condition, especially after China’s entry to WTO.The requirement for news translation stimulated the scholars to study thestrategies in this field in the past decades, which developed the theory of newstranslation a lot. The western scholars have paid attention to the ties between texttypes and translation strategies for a long time, among whom the German scholar,Reiss is one who achieves much. She classifies texts into three types, namely, thecontent-focused text, the form-focused text and the appeal-focused text and proposesthat translators should use different translation criteria and strategies for different texttypes according to their distinctive functions and translation purposes.By applying her theory, this paper tries to confirm the feasibility of theemployment of the theory of text typology to news translation and to explain the waysin which the theory is used to analyze the news and the translation strategies chosenaccordingly in four chapters:Chapter one gives a brief introduction of the present study from the point of thebackground, the purpose and the significance of it and at last, it presents the layout ofthe thesis.The second chapter reviews functionalism translation theory, Reiss’s text typology in functional translation criticism, the definition, classifications and featuresof news, and three factors which will influence the choice of translation strategies.Chapter three addresses news translation in terms of text typology and thetranslation of news of different types, where research questions and hypothesis areclarified.The last chapter reveals main findings of the research and its implication to theresearch of news translation. It definitely conveys the limitation of the research andsuggestions to further study.Through this research, it can be concluded that Reiss’s text typology can bewidely used in the news translation. With the dynamic change of news, translationstrategies employed in the translation process can not stand still.
