Miao is in China one of ethnic-minorities with a large population, whose costumes has been reputed as "the large family of consumes",and some say they are " the live fossils of the history of Chinese Costumes". Miao people are mainly distributed in Guizhou, Hunan, Yunnan, Sichuan, Guangxi and Hubei and so forth. Most of them, however, are spread across in Guizhou,a province with more than480million inhabitants, accounting for over half the population of the whole province, and naturally Miao’s costumes in there are extraordinarily variable and various in their styles,designs and colors. By the in-death research to the minority people living in Southwest Guizhou,the author of this paper deeply feel that the costumes in this area have quite distinctive features from decorations and compositions to color match and in some degree inspire meticulous paintings of flowers and birds (MPFB)(Gongbi in Chinese, the traditional Chinese realistic painting in characterized by fine brushwork and close attention to detail) of flowers-and-birds in terms of materials, structures, colors,and so on. Besides, these costumes not only show another new art expression for MPFB but also make it with more features and, as a result, bring the new life of its development and creation. There are many similarities between Miao’s costumes and MPFB in aesthetic appreciation, compositions and colors The great values of painting Miao’s costumes contain still remain to be dug and adapted.MPFB has occupied a unique, noticeable and important statue in the treasure house of Chinese painting art.Since1980s,MPFB has been offered the atmosphere and platform of free development by the grand of Emancipation, which has renewed the concept of different types of art including MPFB. And it has gradually shown a trend of diversified development due to the collision between it and other different cultures of both of the west and the east. The flower-and-bird painting art is currently flourishing and showing its vitality, of which MPFB has widely absorbed nourishment coming from other cultures and made a breakthrough and innovation in skills, moulding,using colours as well as composition and so forth, besides, the expression skills and materials has become richer than before. MPFB will go with the time and finally be an art pattern that charactered by a nation and an era.On the road the bright future, the transformation of MPFB should be done under the premise of traditional culture and national spirit.Under the current environment of protecting intangible cultural heritage, combining the local inhabitant’s resources and teaching at college can not only build a Chinese art education system for minorities but also fully understand and inherit the excellent resources of art for minorities. At the same time, during the process of learning, students can broaden their minds and know the outstanding national culture and art form with regional features and, consequently form a consciousness of preserving and inheriting the traditional national ethnic culture.There are plenty of studies on ethnic costumes at home, a large number of which are found in essays and books about the costumes of Southeast Guizhou where Miao people have densely gathered and their customs are magnificent. While there are few researches on Southwest Guizhou’s and combining the ethnic elements with MPFB only can be found in some short articles and pictures. In previous years, Federation of Literary and Art Circles of Southwest Guizhou and the local normal university for nationalities had planned to build a research project about this but abandoned finally due to various reasons. As a result, the fact is that Miao’s customs of this area and their painting values, and how to combine traditional ethnic art with college education still remain to be discovered.References used in this paper are mainly put into four categories as followed: First:a series of books of theory and essays on Miao’s costumes and MPFB in Guizhou; Second:pictures in relation to Miao’s costumes and MPFB in Guizhou; Third:articles about Miao’s costumes in Guizhou and modern MPFB. Besides, through the field research to villages in Southwest Guizhou,visiting old artists.contacting local traditional culture agencies.collecting,sorting and researching Miao’s costumes art in Guizhou, studying the art achievement of the costumes,exploring the values of art and culture they contain,so that this paper can provide the creation and development of MPFB with more referable,fine techniques of expression of traditional folk art. By interviewing, collecting, sorting and researching the art characters of Miao’s costumes in this region, the author is trying to combine MPFB courses at college with own experience of creation, and study whether it is practical for the modern MPFB to adapt the customs’ features.The first section of this essay elaborates the geography conditions,aesthetic culture and custom culture of Miao people of Southwest Guizhou; the second shows the characteristics and expression forms of modeling.colors, principles of color matching, patterns and accessories;the third states features of the lines, colors, compositions and aesthetic orientations;the forth sums up the significance that Miao’s customs bring the MPFB education at college and its methods; the fifth section shows the specific and practical methods of expression based on the combination of practice of instructing students and the author’s own experience of study.
