In the21st century, China’s foreign exchanges are becoming increasinglyfrequent. The quality of C-E translation for international communication (TIC forshort) exerts a great impact on the effect of international publicity communication. Thus, they are drawing ever greater attention. In recent years, the study of this type oftranslation develops in diversified ways, one of which involves the research offunctionalist approaches.German functionalist approaches comprise text type analysis, function andpurpose theory, participant analysis and detailed research on translating phases andassessment, covering almost all the aspects of translation process. The systematic andguiding characteristics of functionalist approaches are the reasons why this thesisemploys functionalist theory as the guidance. However, the current research of TIC is far from sufficient, say nothing of theresearch from the functionalist perspective. The present research lacks of a systematictheoretical framework. The studies in this field only serve a particular subdivision.Although some researches adopt functionalist theory as their guidance, they still failto make clear classifications of TIC texts. Instead of researching this type oftranslation as a whole, these researches don’t give clear and specific descriptionsabout the translator’s missions, each step of translating process, and how the theoryguides the practice. To facilitate the advancement of publicity translation, this thesis will study howTIC operates based on functionalist approaches. In a word, the thesis makes somesupplements to the foregone researches and attempts to systemize the text types, functions, purpose and process of publicity translation, emphasizing the guidance offunctionalist approaches in TIC practice.
