Chinese-English Translation Of Pharmaceutical Instruction In Light Of German Functionalist Approaches

With the intensification of reform and opening-up, and also the rapid development of Chinese Medical and Health Services, each year plenty of drugs are exported from China to other countries in the world. Undoubtedly, the drug curative effect is very important. However, the Pharmaceutical Instruction in the Drug Package also can’t be ignored. We have to admit that there are many problems in the Chinese-English translation of Pharmaceutical Instructions in China. This deserves more attention of translation studies.This thesis, adopting German Functionalist Approach as its theoretical basis, through the analysis of the cases collected from the daily life, focuses mainly on the translation principles and translation skills for the translation of Chinese Pharmaceutical Instructions.It is composed of five chapters. Chapter one is Introduction. Chapter two briefly introduces the definition of Pharmaceutical Instructions. Meanwhile, it presents the text structure and linguistic features in English Pharmaceutical Instructions. Chapter three is an overview of German Functionalist Approaches. With the guidance of German Functionalist Approaches, Chapter four discusses tentatively in two aspects: the translation principles.and skills for the Chinese-English Translation of Pharmaceutical Instructions. On the basis of the above chapters. Chapter five concludes the whole thesis. This thesis employs qualitative research methods and combines theory probes with case studies.Through the research on C-E Translation of PIs, on one hand, the author believes that translator should have a good understanding of text structure and linguistic features of English Original PIs before the process of C-E Translation of PIs. On the other hand, the author found that compared with other translational theories, German Functionalist Approaches have a better guidance to C-E Translation of PIs.
